How to Start Taking Action and Make it Last

Taking action can be tough when we feel demotivated, unsure what to do, scared of the future or like a chronic procrastinator.

If you feel stuck, like you’re going in circles or not progressing in the way you want then keep reading (or watch video here )…

In this post we’re going to share:

  • Key mindsets that can hold us back
  • 2 Important ingredients that’re essential for creating lasting action
  • The most common mistakes people mistake when acting on what you want

We know first-hand how complacent it can feel to be coasting through life and going through the motions.

It’s like floating on a lilo out at sea and suddenly looking back to see we’ve drifted so far from the shore. Without action, we drift and become even more disconnected from ourselves and what we want.

Whether it be living based on other peoples agendas, or being unclear on what we want. We’ve felt unfulfilled and frustrated and lost sight of the massive action needed to be happy and fulfilled.

Energy often gets wasted on things that don’t matter, which in turn means our energy isn’t going towards what we want.

To be clear – when we say ‘what we want’ we’re referring to what’s aligned with us. It’s not just about the physical things you want. It’s about staying true to your moral compass and what you value the most in life.

When we are aren’t taking action, the best ways to get on track is to ask useful questions, gain clarity of our thoughts, our why and our goal.

When our clients master the direction of their thinking and take action, it’s led them to:

  • Opening up their own businesses
  • Getting promoted
  • Relationships improving
  • Gaining more confidence
  • And working on projects they care about for the greater good.

And you can do what’s aligned to who you are too.

Before we share the 2 essential ingredients for creating lasting action, check out these mindsets and make sure you’re not buying into them.

5 Mindsets That Hold us Back from Taking Action

As true as this is, it doesn’t have to be a choice. Just because we’re striving for something else doesn’t equate to being ungrateful.

So if you feel guilty for wanting more, remember you can be grateful and work towards other things too.

In our society we seem to have a habit of waiting for recognisition.

We wait for someone to fall in love with us… promote us… or wait for approval…

But the waiting is stopping us in our tracks.

We are activators in our own lives, it’s time to embrace it.

Manifestation gets confused sometimes. There’s this idea that if we say enough affirmations or look at our vision board enough then our life will change.

The reality is that we need to ‘be’ the thing we want to ‘come’.

This is why ‘be’ precedes the word ‘come’ in become.

We must own the identity of what we wish to manifest before it’ll show up in our lives.

An Olympian must behave like an Olympian before they get the title.

We need to feel the feelings and walk the walk before we bring anything into fruition.

Believing we can’t do something is enough to stop you taking action.

When we believe we can’t do something or we aren’t good enough to do / have something, we close the door to possibility.

If you resonate with this, explore this belief system. Changing your beliefs at the deepest levels will guarantee change for life.

Time and time again we see people looking for the latest trend to spring them into action.

For example, the ‘best morning routine’ or ‘hacks to be an action taker’

But these quick fixes don’t work because they aren’t linked to a deep relevant long-term vision.

Instead they breed more frustration because we try them for a short period of time and then give up.

Here’s how to make sure you don’t fall into these ideas, and how to act towards what you want.

2 Essential Ingredients For Taking Action

1. Directional Thinking

As human beings we tend to think in one of two ways.

- Towards what we want OR towards what we don’t want -

Your job is to become aware of where your focusing.

Because being concerned by what we don’t want, consumes our time and energy which in turn takes us away from moving forwards

As Tony Robbins says, our energy goes where attention goes.

If your attention is focused on everything you don’t want, guess what you’re going to get? Yes you guessed it – more of what you don’t want.

By focusing on what you want, you see the opportunity and your energy flows into action.

For directional thinking to help you in taking action you need to get clear on what you want.

Take some time now to reflect on what you want and what’s aligned with you specifically.

2. The HOW Funnel

When we don’t take action it’s often because the how isn’t clear, the how is too big or we aren’t excited by the how.

Your second job, after getting clear on WHAT you want, is to complete your HOW Funnel.

Imagine a funnel and the wide opening of the funnel is your outcome.

Your outcome could be 10 years, 5 years, 1 year, months or even weeks into the future.

The aim here is to break down the small steps that need to happen to achieve the outcome goal.

It helps to make the small steps as enjoyable as possible with some fun or reward system included too.

These small steps add up for big forward momentum.

The reason why the HOW Funnel is so powerful is because you see the big picture. You see how 1 small step connects with the big outcome goal at the end. You become deeply connected with the why of even the smallest action which makes it feel worthwhile.

Plan your own HOW Funnel and reach out if you have any questions.

Until then, make sure you don’t make any of the mistakes below….

3 Common Mistakes When Taking Action

1. Compare yourself to others

Stay in your own lane. When we compare ourselves its too easy to become misaligned to who you are and what you want.

It’s health to model people who have achieved similar outcomes to what we have but don’t try to become them , be original.

Comparing your day 1 to someone else’s day 1000 often stops people from trying. Remember this is your journey, not theres.

2. Don’t ask for help

It’s common to correlate asking for help as weakness. But the truth is that’s the ego talking. EVERYONE needs help with something.

If you struggle to articulate what you need help with;

Simply reach out to a friend, mentor or a coach and say ‘I want help, not sure how to explain what I need’. They will help you figure it out.

Every human being has the ability to listen and connect with where you are. Two minds coming together become a super resourceful mind full of all sorts of wonderful solutions.

An accountability buddy, coach or peer group certainly makes it even easier but the key is knowing your HOW Funnel and Direction of Thinking.

3. Overestimate what you can do in 1 year but Underestimate what you can do in 10

Be realistic. So long as your moving forwards in the right direction then you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.

Plans will need adjusting on the way, that’s the nature of life.

But people fail because they doubt themselves and give up all together.

Stay the course and you may even surprise yourself with how much action you’re taking.

When we take care of our Directional Thinking and follow our HOW Funnel, lasting action is born. It will connect what’s most important to you with personal responsibility to make it happen. Your time, energy and actions will be ustilised in a way which serves you.

Here’s the first thing to do once you finish reading to this:

Grab your wellness journal and score yourself on a scale of 1-5 (low-high), based on how you feel.

If you’re taking action consistently towards what you want it’ll be a 5 and if you’re totally stagnant or moving backwards it’ll be a 1.

Use this measure to gauge how you’re progressing each day.
